Los Angeles City Council Unanimously Opposes SB 50

Yesterday was a great day at City Hall! Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously against SB 50... City Hall was packed to the rafters! Los Angeles has joined San Francisco in voting to not support SB 50.

Thank you for calling, submitting comments, and joining the troops at City Hall!

Councilmembers Koretz, Bonin, and Ryu made great speeches...

Among the many problems with SB 50, they explained how SB 50 threatens HPOZs, that will no longer be protected, and single family communities, will be upzoned and destroyed for large developer giveaway SB 50 projects.

SB 50 will threaten and affect the lives of Angelenos at every end of the spectrum... homeowners and renters.. it is NOT affordable housing and will threaten affordable and RSO communities and cause displacement. Local zoning will be thrown out the window, as well as all L.A's Community Plans, and there will be no local control, no community, or neighborhood council input.

Among the many opposing organizations..

Fifty five equity, social justice and affordable housing act.LA orgs have signed a letter opposing SB 50 ...with major concerns about affordable housing and displacement of their communities.. The Coalition for Economic Survival as well... And The League of California Cities ..

Community Impact Statements opposing SB 50 from a number of Neighborhood Councils were submitted to the file, as well as many letters from individuals and other orgs.

Our Councilmember, David Ryu, spoke eloquently about the effects of this bill on residents of all the diverse communities and neighborhoods in L.A. .. from renters in affordable and RSO housing, to homeowners and HPOZ communities.

From Coalition to Preserve LA...

Yesterday the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously 12-0 AGAINST  SB 50.. City Councilman Paul Koretz slammed SB 50 as "trickle down economics" that would gentrify much of Los Angeles and force the city's large working class further away from their jobs. Koretz said Wiener's vision of erecting 6-story to 8-story buildings in thousands of low-rise and single-family residential areas is focused on the wrong questions and wrong answers. Wiener "has called single-family homes IMMORAL" and "his bill would destroy yards and space to raise a family in L.A.", Koretz told the packed and cheering Los Angeles City Council chambers. Council members David Ryu and Mike Bonin cited their own long lists of objections to the misguided bill. "Los Angeles has 100,000 fully approved housing units that have not yet been built" by developers, Koretz said. 13,000 more under the new Measure JJJ TOCs..and that's just the beginning. It would be absurd to invite developers to now wipe out vibrant existing neighborhoods while they sit like gloating toads on land they can develop right now. Angelenos came downtown to City Hall yesterday to oppose SB 50 from the San Fernando Valley, South L.A., Koreatown, Eastside, Northeast L.A., Westside, West Adams, Boyle Heights, Crenshaw, Sunland-Tujunga, Hollywood, and more. THANK YOU ANGELENOS! Let's build on this HUGE success. From home or work right now, send a quick easy email to the Sacramento legislative committee that has the power to KILL SB 50 on April 24 -- the Governance and Finance Committee. email ..... anton.favorini-csorba@sen.ca.gov
