Break-In: the good and the bad

The bad: Today at about 11:15am, our house at 6675 Whitley Terrace was broken into. The guy jumped our little gate, then broke into the house by smashing a window open, ripping through the screen, then reaching in to open the sliding glass door. Our alarm immediately went off (neither of us was in the house) when he broke the screen. POST ALARM called and my husband, who was in the other building, went out to investigate. He was walking around the outside of the house (with POST still on the phone) when he saw the broken window and a man standing in my office. He asked the man if he knew the way out and the man said yes. The man then walked out of the house, through the little gate but stayed lingering around the front of the house (??). The good: POST ALARM came right away and detained the man by talking to him - the man wasn't making sense: he said he lived at our house and he wanted all the people to leave. A few minutes later the Hollywood division of the LAPD came in force - 6 cars and about 8-10 policemen and put the guy in handcuffs. The police said right away that their collaboration with POST is always a great experience - that made us feel good. They made us stay outside the house while they walked through and checked everywhere. They were amazing! The guy had ripped our alarm panels off the walls in the front and back of the house, and broke another window in our kitchen, but he didn't take anything. And, best of all, no one (my husband!) was hurt! A very scary incident. We have lived here for 25 years and this is a first for us. I really want to commend POST ALARM - first, for their Mr. Stringer who detained the perp very calmly and professionally for about 8-10 minutes before police arrived, then for sending their service people within an hour to completely repair the panels and get the system back up and working; AND the LAPD ~ they were amazingly thorough and courteous and made sure we were alright. Grateful that we keep our alarm on all the time. It's a very sad situation in our city, and most cities, right now with all the drug addiction and people without homes... this guy clearly needs help and I hope he can get it.
