Community Safety
Report from recent safety meeting:
COMMUNITY SAFETY TOP OF MIND
It is no secret that the existence of Kawika Barrett has had an impact on WHCA community members for nearly two years. As a result a security meeting was recently hosted at a neighbor's home. Due to space constraints, attendees consisted of representation from all WHCA regions/streets. Four serve on WHCA board.
Special guest speakers were SLO Heather Mata, Neighborhood Prosecutor, Ethan Weaver, Homeless Services Advocate, Douglas Walker, Mike Williams of POST, and two representatives from LAPD's Mental Evaluations Unit.
This purpose of the meeting was to initiate an action plan with measures to hopefully help this individual, and others like him, get the help they need to function in society.
When you encounter Mr. Barrett, please drop a brief email towhitleyheightsinfo@gmail.comwith the following details:
• nearest address of sighting, ie. 1234 Whitley Avenue
• date AND time of sighting
a brief description of his activities, especially if on someone's private property, or if engaged in any conduct worth mentioning (climbing fence, etc)
• if you contact the police make sure to request the incident number and jot it down. Be sure to include this number in your email to the whitleyheightsinfo address. This will provide a major organizational benefit for dealing with the situation. If there is no incident report number, then in the eyes of the court, its almost as if it never happened.
• photo (if easy to do so... public photography is legal, as there is no expectation of privacy in public, BUT do not want to agitate or unnecessarily trigger anyone by doing so)
• any other notes that you would like to include, or even short video clip if captured by your security camera
Two volunteers will man the email address and field questions. They will forward sightings to Officer Mata, Ethan Weaver, and Post Patrol. This is aneighborhood effort. Everyone’s input is valued.
Mental illness is a disease. We understand this process may not sit well with some, however, we need to have compassion.

Thanks for sharing Carl. I will be more careful when walking.
Hopefully this guy will get the help that he needs.
