SB827 Defeat..Follow up Articles

You've probably heard that SB827 was defeated.

Thank you if you e-mailed, and/or called Senators.

Many attended the hearing in Sacramento to oppose SB827...hundreds of cities from across the state, as well as affordable housing and social justice advocate orgs.,every end of the spectrum.

Sen. Weiner's land use bills to hand over neighborhoods across the state to developers, and take away local control, will keep coming.

Will try to keep the community updated.

Here are two good articles...

Controversial Housing Bill, SB827 (Weiner), Goes Down to Defeat!

"SB 827 would have eliminated cities’ ability to regulate issues such as parking requirements, density and building heights within a half-mile of transit hubs or within a quarter-mile of major transit corridors.

“Density for density’s sake doesn’t necessarily lead to affordability,” said State Senator Ben Allen"

Sen. Ben Allen argued that if that were true, dense  NYC would be affordable.

He also argued that HPOZ's  would not be protected.

He voted against SB827

Wiener had sold his measure as a solution to California’s housing crisis and a means of bringing about the dense, green, transit-oriented development that the governor and his supporters prefer. Yet it failed, in large part because few cities wish to give up their zoning power and because even affordable-housing advocates don’t believe that handing blank checks to developers will do much to lower rents or housing prices...... "
