INTERESTING BEHIND THE SCENES TROUBLE FOR SB 50:

When the senate big boss, state Sen. President Pro Tem Toni Atkins (a huge Wiener fan - Weiner wrote SB 50) conducted an informal poll of the senate caucus after all those calls and emails, she found only 15 votes FOR SB 50, votes out of the 39 senators, with the rest of the caucus refusing to participate in her polling.

She was left with ZERO basis for pressuring Appropriations chair Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-Glendale) to pass the bill out of his committee.

Portantino, who himself was getting a LOT of direct calls against SB 50 from you and others, quickly moved to shelve the bill until 2020. It is NEARLY dead.

HERE'S WHY (aside from it's a nice thing to do): YIMBY California is launching on Monday a major social media effort to politically harm Anthony Portantino for sending the bill into hibernation.

Their goal is to show the less courageous legislators that any of them who continue to oppose SB 50, as Portantino did, and even any who refuse to back SB 50, will be punished.

YIMBY California is a developer lobbying group with many millions of tech and real estate dollars, and a staff, and they co-wrote SB 50 with Wiener.

They're also nasty folks.

Wiener may try to revive the bill.

He could try a fancy "gut and amend" of another of his own bills, keeping its core elements alive over on the assembly side and then getting it back over to the senate.

Toni Atkins can also pull one or two tricks.

Right now, they face a huge obstacle because legislators hate this bill.

But not if the YIMBYs succeed at laying on a hand on Portantino.

Sen. Portantino is a good man, who has an affordable housing (Glendale) bill, and a housing for homeless college students bill, among others...it's horrible how the yimbys are trashing him in emails and trying to take him down.
