SUPPORT HISTORIC DESIGNATION 6555 FRANKLIN AVE.

From our Franklin Ave. neighbor, Susan Winsberg. Susan is part of our Whitley Ave. Preservation Team.

Dear friends and neighbors,

Many of you were instrumental in saving the stately Neo-colonial, N.F. Stokes Mansion, at 1905 Grace Ave. (and Franklin) in Hollywood a few years ago. Against all odds we prevented it from being demolished, and now it has Historic-Cultural Monument status and is safe. We came together and made it happen.

Well, now another gorgeous house built by the same architect in 1919 (it's a hundred years old this year!) needs your help. This architect, N.F. Stokes, was very fanciful in his approach to developing the neighborhood, having built the (now HCM) Neo-Colonial, a Dutch Revival, a French Beaux Arts (the one now in danger) and an English Cottage, all on the same block!

The house in question is at 6555 Franklin Ave. and is a rare example of Beaux Arts architecture in Hollywood. This historic 1919 gem is in great condition, and if it goes, it will surely create a domino effect, and the other two adjacent historic houses will soon follow. Your support is VERY important. There is a lot at stake here -- not just this one house. The demolition of this house would create a precedent in this historic neighborhood, and many of our treasured houses and apartment buildings from Hollywood's rich past would be erased forever. We mustn't let that happen.

Please consider joining us to speak at the Cultural Heritage Commission hearing.... Thursday May 16th 10:00AM. 200 N. Spring St. 10th floor Rm. 1010 (Agenda https://mail.aol.com/webmail-std/en-us/basic#)

If you are able to attend, call your councilmember office the day before for FREE parking in the building. If you are not able to attend, and can only send an email to the commissioners, all the info. is below, and that would be greatly appreciated too.

The Cultural Heritage Commissioners listen thoughtfully to all commenters attending hearings, and read emails submitted. Interest and support from the community, community turnout and input, helps them with their decisions.

In you email, please ask them to support the application to designate this house as an Historic Cultural Monument. That wording in bold is very important.

Please don't mention demolition or development or gridlock, as the Cultural Heritage Commissioners are ONLY concerned with 'historic significance'. ...architectural and other historic criteria.

Please emphasize 'historic significance'.....the architecture and it's contribution to the neighborhood.

"This is a historic Hollywood neighborhood, with a number of early 20th century historic buildings along Franklin Ave. and Whitley Ave., which was part of the original Whitley Heights development. Whitley and Franklin are "HPOZ Adjacent" streets leading into the historic 1920s Whitley Heights HPOZ. 6555 Franklin Ave. is an example of a style of architecture in Hollywood, circa 1919, and it should be historically preserved, so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come..."

Impress upon them what this house means to you and/or the neighborhood, and how important it is to designate it as a Historic Cultural Monument and protect it for future generations, etc. If you don't have time to write much, please just say you're in favor of its designation (and use the phrase in bold above.)

Thank you very much! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your activism. Let's save another historic Hollywood house in our neighborhood!
