The South Carthay Neighborhood Association is extremely concerned by the threat to HPOZs in Los Angeles and historic districts across the state, due to State Senate bill SB 50 now in committees.
State Senator Scott Weiner (D-SF) has authored a new and worse version, SB 50, of this much-reviled SB 827 (defeated last year).
He is now chairman of his own new committee, Housing, and from this perch he is pushing hard to steamroller it through the legislature.
He has powerful lobbyists backing him and they have mounted a sophisticated and well-funded PR campaign to get it passed quickly, before Californians realize what has happened and can mount a push-back and stop this misbegotten, undemocratic legislation.
SB 50 is a pro-development bill under the guise of being an "affordable housing" bill, which it most definitely is NOT.
SB 50 takes away from cities and towns their own zoning ordinances and instead creates "development free-fire zones" for private developers in wide swaths of California's cities, including Los Angeles.
Our three Carthay HPOZs are directly in the crosshairs of this bill.
We are sponsoring this Free, Public event to educate residents and other stakeholders about SB 50, and to explain how it would impact us directly.
We will have speakers who are experts on this bill and have invited representatives from Senators Allen and Mitchell, Assembly Members Bloom and Kamlager-Dove and Council Members Koretz and Wesson. So far, there will be someone from Allen's office attending and other invitations are pending. Then we will discuss how to push back; we will distribute information on how to let our legislators in Sacramento (and Los Angeles) know that we adamantly OPPOSE the destruction of our historic districts.
