SB9 and SB10 Updates

SB9 and SB10 updates from Livable California.. From Yesterday's Citywatch..Former L.A. City Planner and regular Citywatch contributor Dick Platkin.. Rolling out the Red Carpet for Real Estate Investors: Q & A on CA State Senate Bills 9 & 10 Dick Platkin 12 August 2021 https://citywatchla.com/index.php/cw/los-angeles/22286-rolling-out-the-red-carpet-for-real-estate-investors-q-a-on-ca-state-senate-bills-9-10 Polling news: SB 9 and SB 10, are opposed by three out of four Californians, according to a poll by former Obama campaign pollster David Binder. The new poll found 71% of Californians oppose SB 9, and 75% oppose SB 10. These are landslide figures. The news came on the heels of an Aug. 7 town hall which drew a 1,100 person crowd from across the state, working to kill the bills when legislators return on Aug. 16. SB 9 ends single-family zoning across California, from rural villages like Angels Camp to dense L.A., letting developers build market-rate projects of 6 units where one home stands today. SB 10 lets nearly every city council in California override CEQA and voter initiatives to let developers build 14-unit projects where one house stood, from single-family streets in tiny Avalon to crowded San Jose. Because mainstream media is unaware of key provisions in the bills, it has fallen to community, environmental, homeowner and social justice groups to warn the public. Now we urge legislators to vote NO on bills opposed by 3 of every 4 Californians. Both bills are opposed by hundreds of city councilmembers, criticized by groups ranging from Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association to the Planning and Conservation League, and opposed by vast Black and Latino homeowner areas in Southern California that are targets of the two bills. 500+ Ca. (One reason Assemblymember Bloom could not support this bill as he represents many VHFSZs, including Whitley Heights)

Sierra Club is also opposed due to SB10 OVERRIDING voter initiatives. https://everythingsouthcity.com/2021/07/sierra-club-california-on-senate-bill-10-planning-and-zoning-housing-development-density-oppose/ SB 9 and 10 give developers carte blanche to destroy millions of yards, gardens and shade trees; build unbridled density in burn areas; bulldoze HISTORIC buildings. All without having to fund the needed water, evacuation routes, power, sewage lines, transit and schools. Here is the full poll by David Binder Research, funded by Housing is a Human Right. See Section 4, questions 36 and 37, for the final results. STATEWIDE TOWN HALL... The Statewide Town Hall on Saturday had 1100 attendees! Everyone on the zoom was informed about the impacts of SB 9 and SB 10 and asked to take action, talk or write their assemblymember and the governor now. For everyone that missed the event, we are including below the one-hour video of the town hall and a video of each of the speakers. Most important are the follow-up actions to stop SB 9 and SB 10. See the Action Tool Kit Here. Also see the Statewide Town Hall - Next Steps page on the Livable California website. Simple Actions now are calling state assemblymembers to urge them to oppose SB9 and SB10. https://www.assembly.ca.gov/assemblymembers All the reasons are here. Off hours are fine..leaving messages is just as effective... Write comments on your assemblymembers website page.. AND Governor Newsom To write a comment on his page: https://govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov40mail/ Phone: 916-445-2841 gavin@gavinnewsom.com The Assembly returns Aug. 16th. The bills go to the Governor Sept. 10th, if they pass. He does not have to do anything with them, express any position, until AFTER the recall. Once he signs them they BECOME LAW. UN had zoom meetings, actively reached out to state reps, and the governor, on going, and each group submitted 'Position Papers' and participated in the on going activism. Some unsung heroes of our neighborhod should be mentioned.

Thank you to FCC, our neighborhood group, 'Franklin Corridor Communities' who joined the UN coalition and stepped up to help protect our community against state mandated development that will take away local land use control, development project notifications, hearings, and public (community) participation, giving developers free (ministerial) reign to densify residential communities across the state, and 'the people', who reside in these communities, will not be able to do a thing about it.
