Project Overview ...
The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a Los Angeles landmark that attracts millions of visitors from around the world every year.
Since 1960, when the first star ceremony was held, more than two thousand stars have been awarded, celebrating honorees in five categories: Motion Pictures, Television, Recording, Radio, and Live Performance.
2020 will mark the 60th anniversary of that first star ceremony, and in recognition of this historic occasion, the City of Los Angeles has undertaken an ambitious program to re-imagine and revitalize the Walk of Fame.
The Hollywood Blvd / Walk of Fame Streetscape Concept Plan is the first step in re-imagining the Walk of Fame for the twenty-first century. It will establish a clear, aspirational vision for the Walk of Fame, laying the foundation for future improvement work.
Project Principles.....
-Create a place that celebrates the unique identity of Hollywood.
-Establish a forward-looking framework to address present-day challenges and anticipate future needs.
-Provide an exemplary experience for pedestrians, bicyclists and transit riders, and enhance safety for all.
-Catalyze economic development throughout the Walk of Fame corridor.
-Provide spaces and amenities that accommodate a range of activities.
-Protect and preserve valuable historic resources.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this project needed?
Hollywood Boulevard today is a crowded space: pedestrians– including residents and tourists–compete for space with necessary infrastructure, including street furnishings, street lighting, landscaping, signage, bicycle parking, scooter parking, as well as other authorized and unauthorized uses, such as vendors, performers, tour operators and sidewalk dining.
As a result, the star attraction—the Walk of Fame—gets lost in the clutter.
Additionally, the physical infrastructure of the Walk of Fame, including street furnishings, signage, landscaping, and star panels in the sidewalk, are all showing their age and like any Hollywood star are in need of a ‘face-lift.’
What is the project area?
The project area includes the entire extent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, comprising Hollywood Blvd from Gower St to La Brea Ave and Vine St from Yucca St to Sunset Blvd.
Who is leading this project?
This is a project of the City of Los Angeles, led by the Bureau of Engineering in partnership with Council District 13 and Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell’s HEART of Hollywood Initiative.
Design work is being led by Gensler, with support from Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants, DCA Civil Engineering Group, Historic Resources Group, and Studio-MLA.
How is the community involved?
Community members and stakeholders have been involved in the planning process through each phase of the project.
The project team has met with residents, business owners, non- profit and community organizations and key city staff in a series stakeholder meetings.
A Community Open House was held on August 22, 2019, and feedback from the broader Hollywood community was solicited and received through online and in- person engagement.
How can I provide feedback or get more information?
Please contact:

How will this impact traffic?
As part of this project, the number of travel lanes on Hollywood Blvd within the project area may be reconfigured.
An initial traffic analysis was conducted and concluded that traffic on Hollywood Blvd can be accommodated with the design options under consideration, including the potential removal of one travel lane in each direction through the project area.
No changes are planned to the number of lanes on other streets within the project area and traffic along all major north-south streets that cross Hollywood Blvd (including Gower, Argyle, Vine, Cahuenga, Highland and La Brea) would be maintained.
How will this impact parking?
Currently, there are approximately 180 on-street parking spaces along the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Blvd, and over 8,400 off- street parking spaces available to the public within one block.
As part of this project, on-street parking along the Walk of Fame may be reconfigured to allow for other uses, such as expanded sidewalks to provide more space for people, consolidated valet stands, and designated rideshare drop-off/pick-up areas.
No changes are planned to existing parking along other streets within the project area.
With excess capacity in existing parking structures, removing on-street parking, which represents only 2% of parking currently available, is not expected to negatively impact businesses, residents or visitors.
What strategies are being considered to improve mobility?
A number of mobility improvements are already underway, including new wayfinding signage clearly marking public parking garages/lots and major attractions (installed in Spring 2019), new digital signage at gateways to Hollywood will direct visitors to parking (coming by the end of 2019) and new digital signage at public garages will show number of spaces available (coming by the end of 2019).
Other potential improvements may include enhanced lighting in parking structures, consolidated valet drop-off/pick-up areas, designated rideshare drop-off/pick-up areas, a trolley along Hollywood Blvd, changes to parking rates in garages, and dedicated bike/scooter lanes and parking areas.
What concept design options are being considered?
There are several concept design options under consideration, which were on display at the August 22nd Community Open House.
Potential concept design options include:
Basic Complete Street
Enhanced Complete Street
Pedestrian Plaza
Has a decision been made?
No, the project is still in the process of developing and evaluating potential design options.
What are the next steps?
The project team will refine the concept design options based on the feedback provided by community members and stakeholders, and develop a concept design plan for review and approval by the City of Los Angeles.
At the Community Open House in August, some of the ideas exhibited for Hollywood Blvd. were: Pocket Parks
Event Spaces
Street Furniture
Shade Trees
Performance Spaces (Live Bands, etc)
Dog Parks
Sidewalk Dining
Wayfinding
Rideshare Zones
