Call to Action: Hollywood Community Plan Must Change
Dear Hollywood Communities,
TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION!
Housing Is A Human Right is reaching out to communities about the update of the Hollywood Community Plan.
Historically, such plans were written to ensure that communities had all the needed resources.
They should cover such important things as INFRASTRUCTURE, Jobs, Schools, and FUTURE NEEDS TO SUPPORT POPULATION GROWTH AND HOUSING.
In the past, these plans WERE WRITTEN WITH INPUT FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS, and Advocacy Groups to envision what the future of an area would look like.
Sadly, community plans are now largely written by the Los Angeles planning department, with only a few public meetings where input is mostly ignored.
The proposed update of the Hollywood Community Plan is a developer giveaway, *BASED ON OUTDATED AND INACCURATE POPULATION DATA to support the narrative that we must build more luxury housing.
*(One of the the main reasons the Judge ruled in favor of three law suits against the 2012 version of the HCP, and threw it out. And they continue to create (as he called it) 'population encouraging' rather than 'population accommodating ' Hollywood Community Plans to justify over densification, but without any infrastructure upgrades.. The Judge told them in 2012 "Hollywood INFRASTRUCTURE cannot withstand the kind of density you want".
I was with 'SaveHollywood', the group of Residential Hollywood communities, and one of the three law suits against the 'higher density, developer accommodating' HCP that won)
The plan doesn’t require lower-income housing that is desperately needed.
It also does nothing to prevent gentrification and displacement, and it largely TAKES AWAY PEOPLE'S SAY IN WHAT'S BUILT IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS.
The city, planning dept., want to obliterate communities rights to participate in how their neighborhoods develop.
City Hall leadership has clearly ignored the needs of middle- and working-class residents who currently live in Hollywood.
In addition, L.A. City Hall may use a flawed, pro-developer, pro-gentrification Hollywood Community Plan as a template for development in other parts of Los Angeles.
This is our chance to save Hollywood -- and, quite possibly, the rest of Los Angeles.
We need the planning department to supply REAL DATA and POPULATION NUMBERS that include the most recent declines due to COVID-19.
DEVELOPER INFLUENCED CITY DEPARTMENTS SHOULD NOT BE THE ONLY ONES PLANNING.
THE COMMUNITY SHOULD ALSO BE DEEPLY INVOLVED.
