NEW STUDIES REVEAL THE EARTHQUAKE RISK TO GIANT HOLLYWOOD PROJECT IS MUCH WORSE THAN THE CITY OR THE DEVELOPER ARE TELLING THE PUBLIC WHAT: A news conference about a July 16 California Geological Survey (CGS) report that warns an environmental review of the Millennium Hollywood project (aka Hollywood Center) fails to truthfully describe the risks of building two skyscrapers on a site that the state seismology report found has ”more than one'' active earthquake fault running through it.
The same property includes the famous Capitol Records building.
The CGS report also found that the methodologies the developer, Millennium Partners, used to dispute evidence of an active earthquake fault on its property were not trustworthy.
“This CGS report is a bombshell,” said attorney Robert P. Silverstein.
“Now we have two independent agencies, the California Geological Survey with its report last week, and the U.S. Geological Survey with its report two months ago, that say the seismic studies prepared by the Millennium developer and sold to the public and city officials as gospel, are woefully inadequate in describing the dangers of building two high-rises on this property.
This has been a cover up of a public safety threat that now – thank goodness – is being exposed.”
In May the USGS, using the latest technology, discovered four near-surface "fault locations" at the Millennium property, these being in addition to the fault mapped by the CGS in 2014.
“In effect, we have as many as five active faults cutting through the project,” said Silverstein.
"If the developer has its way, thousands of people would be living in two skyscrapers, one 46 stories tall, the other 35 stories, sitting on land riddled with earthquake faults."
“City officials and residents of Los Angeles should not allow themselves to be hoodwinked by this developer and its phony earthquake studies,” said Silverstein.
Millennium Partners also built the notorious “leaning tower of San Francisco,” a structurally defective skyscraper.
“Millennium's San Francisco skyscraper was built on landfill mud, not bedrock, and that turned out very badly,” said Silverstein.
“And now the same developer wants to build two skyscrapers on a site riddled with active faults in Hollywood. What’s wrong with that picture?”
Silverstein says the city of Los Angeles should immediately stop processing Millennium’s land-use applications in light of the brand new CGS and USGS findings.
Moreover, because there is an ongoing FBI probe of certain developers corrupting LA city officials, and because some of those same suspect officials played a starring role in a prior version of this reckless Millennium project, the City Council and Mayor should join with the public in demanding a halt to any City approvals until the FBI has completed its work.
WHEN: 10 am Wednesday, July 22, 2020.
WHERE: The large traffic island at the corner of Argyle and Yucca Streets in Hollywood, with the iconic Capitol Records building as the backdrop.
WHO: Attorney Robert P. Silverstein, who represents the StopTheMillenniumHollywood.com, a coalition of homeowner groups and activists. Silverstein fought the original Millennium project for seven years and won rulings in every court, including the California Supreme Court, that finally forced Millennium Partners to scrap its original illegal project.
